Artist Statement for works of "comfort women" of the Japanese army in East Asia during the Japanese colonial period
* 소녀를 위하여 / For a girl

작품에서 보이는 보랏빛 세 잎으로 이루어진 사랑초는 ‘당신을 절대로 잊지 않을게요’라는 꽃말을 갖고 있습니다.
저는 그 꽃말을 차용하여 잊혀서는 안 되는 존재들, 지키고 싶은 존재들에 대한 이야기를 작품으로 표현하고 있습니다.
이 작품은 2013년 첫 아이를 임신했을 당시 미디어를 통해 자주 마주한 일본군 ‘위안부’ 할머니들께 직접적인 도움을 드리지는 못하나 가만히 있기가 불편한 저의 마음을 표현한 작품입니다. 이렇게 작은 마음이라도 그분들께 힘이 되었으면 하는 바람으로 그렸습니다.
소녀상 옆 빈자리를 채운 새는 설화에서 차용한 접동새입니다. 억울한 죽음의 사연을 담고 있는 설화를 통해 당시 나라를 잃고 슬픔에 빠진 우리 민족의 한을 의미하는 접동새가 소녀상의 옆자리를 함께하고 있음을 표현하였습니다.
Sarangcho, the deep purple three-leafed plant you could see in the painting has its flower language: we will never forget you. Based on the meaning of the flower, I expressed beings who should not be forgotten, and who should be protected.
In 2013, when I was pregnant, I often encountered issues related to Japanese military slavery; 'Comfort Women' through media. I felt very ashamed that I could not give any physical help to them due to my situation, so in order to contribute, I started creating this artwork.
The bird sitting next to the 'Comfort Women' statue (Sonyosang) is called Jeobdong bird which the motif is derived from a Korean folk tale. Through the tale that talks about victimized souls, I drew a Jeobdong bird which implies deep sorrow and suffering of our people who lost their country at the time.

전쟁이 끝나 돌아와서도 천대받거나 혹은 숨겨야 했던 그들의 존재에 대한 고민으로, 상여인듯 하지만 꽃가마이면서 집을 연상시키는 이미지를 그려서 그들의 귀향을 환영하는 마음을 표현하였습니다.
하늘 위에 두둥실 떠있는 가마는 나비와 같은 날갯짓 이미지의 사랑초로 보호받으며 그들의 귀향을 환영받습니다.
This painting is my concernment of the beings that were treated contemptuously or had to hide even after the end of war. I express my heart that welcomes their return by drawing an image that looks like a bier but also like a flower palanquin or home. The palanquin floating over the sky warmly welcomes and guards them coming home with numerous images of sarangcho which looks like butterflies’ fluttering.

전쟁 중 끔찍한 성폭행으로 인한 임신, 원하지 않게 만들어지고 사라진 생명들.
한번쯤은 그들을 위한 그림으로 그들을 기리고 싶었습니다.
그림 속 모델은 1944년 연합군이 촬영한 사진 속 (고)박영심 할머니입니다.
원하지 않은 임신을 하고도 고통받은 여성들, 태어나지도 못한 생명들, 혹은 태어나서도 죽음을 당해야만했던 생명들. 너무나 끔찍해서 상상하기도 말로 표현하기도 감당하기가 어렵습니다.
다음 생에는 축복받는 생명이기를 기도합니다.
Pregnancy caused by horrendous sexual assault during the war, and the lives that were born and gone…
I wanted to honor their ideals through the painting.
The model of the painting is Yeongsim Park who was photographed by the Allied Forces in 1944.
Women who have suffered unwanted pregnancies, unborn lives, or lives that had to be killed after they were born… It is so horrible that it is difficult to imagine or even express.
I pray for them to be a blessed life in the next life.
